The five-week academic enrichment program incorporates job shadowing and hands on learning with rigorous inter-disciplinary education. The program provides an educational venue while promoting Waterbury Hospital’s healthy living message. The students in grades 10-12, participated in the program from June 24 through July 26.

This year’s program included job shadowing, hands on learning including CPR and Stop the Bleed training, a research project on health equity, health classes including Yoga and strength training, as well as tours of different areas of the hospital.

Summer Bridge is one of several programs that are part of the Youth Pipeline Initiative, formed in 2001 as a collaboration between Waterbury Hospital and Waterbury Public Schools to close the achievement gap for minority and economically disadvantaged students in Waterbury so they can matriculate and compete for college placement.

This is one of two summer programs for high schoolers being held at Waterbury Hospital. The second one-week program is a collaboration with Northwest Regional Workforce Development, Waterbury Public Schools, and other community partners. That program runs July 29- Aug. 2
